Mets

With Alonso opting out of his two-year deal with the Mets, it will be interesting to see if he ends up leaving the team this time. This same scenario happened last year, where Mets fans thought that was it with Alonso being on the team. However, he would end up re-signing after all the rumors that occurred. If he actually leaves for real this time, who do the Mets get to fill that void at first base?

One of the names that have come out recently is Josh Naylor from the Mariners. The Mariners had one heck of a run in the playoffs this season but ended up short of their goal of making their first World Series in franchise history.

Naylor had a really solid walk year with the Mariners, posting a .295 avg, with 20 bombs and 95 rbis. He also had a really solid postseason, in 12 games he hit .340, had 3 bombs and 5 rbis. If the Mariners decide not to bring back the 28 year old, he could definitely be an option for the Mets in Alonso were to walk.

Another name that has been talked about is Munetaka Murakami, the 25 year old sensation from Japan. Murakami, who is usually a third baseman, can be another solid fit for the Mets if Alonso walks. Yes he may be a third baseman but he has had his struggles at third, which is why when he comes into the MLB, he will most likely be moved to first.

Murakami, a two-time Central MVP and 4x all star in the NPB, had a phenomenal career there hitting over 250 homers and having a lifetime average of .273, while also winning a triple crown. The Mets can try and take a chance with him and see how he does shifting to first base if they have a void there during the offseason.

An in house option the Mets can go with is Brett Baty. Now while Baty isn’t a natural first baseman, he has shown improvements in his defense at the hot corner and should be able to switch to first base if need be. Defensively he shouldn’t be a problem, what is interesting to see is if he can keep improving on the offense side of the things.

In 130 games this season, Brett Baty put up some promising numbers. He had a .254 avg which he could improve upon, as well as 18 home runs and 50 rbis. If he ends up as the Mets first baseman next season, he definitely can see an increase in those numbers, especially if he is able to play every day.

It will be interesting once again to see how this Mets offseason plays out. With the chance Alonso actually walks this year, it will be intriguing to see if the Mets stay in house to get their next first baseman for the future or if they go to free agency or even a trade. All anyone can do right now is wait until the offseason starts and see if Alonso is a Met or not at the end of it.
